We have been using our Maths skills to think about shopping. When you go shopping and buy a few items you need to be able to add up the total cost. When you pay for your shopping you need to know the value of all the coins and notes, and shopkeepers like it if you can find the correct change – especially if you can do it in the smallest number of coins possible. When we don’t have the correct money the shopkeeper needs to give us change.
These links to shopping maths games will help you practise the Maths we have been doing, but best of all, when you go shopping with Mum and Dad, ask if you can help them!

On Thursday we had a fantastic day out at Leeds Art Gallery. We did a workshop with Amanda Phillips, who showed us how to be ‘Art Detectives!’ We enjoyed looking round the gallery and thinking about questions that we would like to ask the artists, if they had been there too. After lunch we went back to explore the galleries and everyone chose an art work they particularly liked and spent some time looking at it really carefully and sketching it. Later back at school we finished our sketches. we wanted to thank Amanda for making our time at the gallery really special, so we wrote some thank you letters to her. We would also like to thank the parents who came on the trip and helped to make it such an enjoyable day out.

Before we went on our trip to Leeds Art Gallery we looked at some of the art works we would see on our visit. One of the artists we looked at was Graham Gussin, and he has an art work at Leeds Art Gallery which we discovered was made from 3 pictures of people that had been cut into strips and then reassembled to make a new picture. We worked in groups of three to create something similar. We had to use a ruler to carefully draw the lines and then cut out the strips. Together each team had to reassemble their pieces so that everyone in the group was happy with the new picture they had created. It was really exciting then to go to the Art GAllery the next day and actually see the picture which Graham Gussin had done displayed.

In our ICT session this week we learned how to use the shape tool and the text tool in an art program called Revelation Natural Art. Last week we learned about 2D shape in Maths, so we used this knowledge too and made these amazing 2D shape posters!

We had a session with a Maths Games circuit set up, so that everyone could have a go on a range of games which are fun ways of practising Maths. We played Mathletics on the class laptops, Snakes and Ladders and numicon Dominoes and we had a roleplay Pudsey Bear cafe. We also learned how to play a game called ‘Rush Hour‘. This is a game which really gets you thinking, as you have to work out how to move the cars and trucks so that the red car (or ice cream van, in the Junior version) can get out of the traffic jam! It takes strategic thinking, concentration and resilience! You can play the game on line with the link above, and ‘Thinkfun games’ in ‘Links.’
Next time we do our Maths Games circuit we will add a few more games – so please share any ideas for games you know that will be fun, but will also practise important maths skills.

Everyone looked amazing when they arrived in class with bright yellow or spotty jumpers, tights, wellingtons and even faces!
In literacy we watched the Peter Kay video for Children in Need, and then wrote some super sentences with adjectives and connectives about our favourite characters. Click the link above to watch it again and see how many characters you can spot!
In Maths we learned about repeated patterns and 1/2 and 1/4 turns. We made some special hats with lots of spots!
Thank you to everyone who brought in donations for Children in Need.

Last Sunday, 11/11/2012, me and my Dad climbed a 694 metre high mountain called Pen-y-Ghent. It was really, really tiring but I felt very proud when I got home. My Daddy has climbed Pen-y-Ghent 3 times!

The children looked at some paintings that they will see at the Art Gallery.( Clare Woods- Daddy Witch, Terry Frost -High Yellow, Ben Nicholson – Painting 1840) They used ideas from these paintings to inspire them in their own art work. They chose whether to to use pastel, paint or pencils.

The children have yet again produced some amazing poems. The poems are based on Pye Corbett’s ‘In My Magic Box’. The children were very creative with their ideas and some children even managed to use alliteration effectively!!
To view the poems please click on the ‘set’ links below.

On Monday morning we were lucky enough to have another fantastic session with Mr Mee and a group of students from Leeds Metropolitan University. Together we had a great drama session and explored an imaginary sea beast. In the afternoon we continued our work and drew our ideas of what the sea beast might look like. We looked at some of the paintings and art works of Clare Woods, as we will see some of her painting in Leeds Art Gallery next week. Her work inspired us to use our imagination and to try and fill the page with colours.
Everyone worked really hard. We chose pastels, water colour paints or pencils to colour our pictures and some of us even combined the different medias. We hope you enjoy our paintings. Thank you to Mr Mee and his students for our drama session and for inspiring us to do this art work.

Soon we are going to visit Leeds Art Gallery, so we are looking at some of the pictures that we will see there. We looked at the abstract art of Ben Nicholson and saw lots of shapes in his pictures. To make our own abstract pictures using shapes we learned how to draw straight lines, fold shapes and cut carefully along straight edges. When we had made our shapes we arranged them to make a picture. We all worked hard and were very proud of our pictures.
