Over the past few weeks in RE, the children have been learning about making good choices. The children have learnt about the ten commandments from the Bible and the 5 Pillars of Islam. Here are some photos of the children making their own pillars.
In his last three assemblies, Mr Harris has been retelling the bible story of Easter: Palm Sunday; overturning the tables in the temple; the last supper; Jesus’ arrest; the crucifixion; resurrection; ‘Doubting Thomas’ and the ascension.

In our topic this week we have been busy learning what life is like in a rural Kenyan village. The children generated questions which they then proceeded to find the answers to. Through drama, film and photos, we learnt what it was like to live in a village in Kenya.

This week in maths, we have been learning how to do addition of two 2 digit numbers. First of all we learned an expanded method where we added the numbers by partitioning them into tens and units:
35 + 23 =
30 + 20 = 50
5 + 3 = 8
50 + 8 = 58
After that some children moved onto using the column method including carrying the ten:
By the end of the week some of us were even adding 3 digit numbers! The children have all worked very hard and we have been impressed by the progress made throughout the week.

As part of our topic on Africa, this week in Literacy we are looking at traditional African tales. We are using Tinga Tales to help ignite our writing. The children are going to be thinking about the characters in the stories and learn how stories are structured. We are going to be using story mountains to help us see how stories are structured. A story mountain has five parts to it: an opening; a build up; a problem; a resolution; and an ending.

2L had a very exciting afternoon today… we went on a trip to Africa! The children all boarded the aeroplane (African Airlines) with their boarding passes and passports. They were welcomed on board by their air hostess Chardonnay- Marie and their pilot Captain Ted Striker! On the way, the children tracked the journey from England to Kenya using a world map. We looked at the different countries we would have to pass over on our journey as well as learning about how long the journey would take. When we finally landed in Africa, we went on a fact finding trail. The children learnt lots of amazing facts about the continent of Africa – I wonder how many they can remember? Over the next few weeks the children are going to focussing on Kenya. We are going to look at physical and human features of the landscape as well as how Kenya is similar and different to Great Britain.

What a busy first week back we have had in Year 2!
In Literacy we are focussing on books written by Julia Donaldson and the children have really enjoyed learning some of the stories. This week we have based our writing on Tiddler and The Snail and the Whale. The children produced some fantastic letters from the Snail to his friends, writing all about the adventures they had been on. All the children wrote in clear paragraphs and remembered capital letters and full stops; some even used exclamation marks! They used some amazing adjectives and used conjunctions to extend their sentences. All the staff were so impressed and the children should all be very proud of their writing!
In Maths we have been learning all about shapes. All the children could label 2D shapes, saying the shape name and how many sides and corners the shape has. We have also worked on the properties of 3D shapes; looking at how many edges, vertices and faces the shape has. We played a fun shape shadow game where the children became really good at guessing the 3D shape based on its 2D shadow!
In Geography, we used Google Earth to locate the UK and discuss where in the UK Farsley is. We even managed to zoom in and find our school! I wonder if any children could find their house using Google Earth?! We talked about the location of other towns, cities and countries in relation to Farsley and discussed the distance from Farsley to other places.
Thank you to everyone who remembered jogging bottoms, sweatshirts and outdoor shoes for PE this week. We enjoyed our first outdoor lesson in Year 2 working on our throwing and catching skills.
We have been very impressed with everybody’s Learning Log measuring work this week- it looks like people had great fun baking and measuring things around the house! Well done everybody.
We very much look forward to seeing many of you at parents evening next week.
Many thanks for your continued support.
