Our wonderful first week in Year 2.
Saturday 12th September | 10 comments
It’s been an incredibly busy week in Year 2. All the children have settled back into school happily and are already working hard and showing brilliant attitudes towards learning. Chair bags give the children the responsibility of looking after their own pencils and pens, all kept neatly in a plastic bag in their own chair bag. They can also keep a small water bottle in the specially designed pocket, so that they are able to have a quick sip of water when they feel a little thirsty. We have new learning teams and each team will have a team leader and a coach, who will help their team be the best they can be for this first term.
Before the children learned to play Mathletics they all did a session about keeping safe on the internet. There is a page in the top menu about e-safety and blogging ,which has the video and story we shared with the children. Everyone has really enjoyed playing different games and many of the children have managed to achieve over 1000 points and have therefore achieved their first bronze certificate. Scores go back to zero on Sunday evenings, so you can still earn points towards this weeks certificate until then. Certificates are printed out at school and will be handed out to the children in class in the following week.
Each week we have a Mathlete of the week. The Mathletics Trophy is given a child to take home for the week and they receive a special certificate. Our first winner was Pareen, who scored over 5,500 points!
We all enjoyed listening to the story, The Five of Us by Quentin Blake. Inspired by his illustrations we all drew our portraits in his style. You can see them on display in our classrooms, along with speech bubbles about what we feel we are great at, what we would like to get better at and what we would like to be when we grow up.
The children have also made some ‘dot’ pictures, inspired by the story, ‘The Dot.’ We will be sharing the story with all the children in school next week and our dining room is going to be covered in dots soon! The story reminds us about the importance of having a go, even when we feel we can’t do something. We have also learned ‘The Dot’ song, which is based on the book. (The book and song will be posted on the Growth Mindset blog very soon)
In Maths the children have been doing some Maths games and puzzles. They have had to persevere and have had to think logically. You might like them to show you some of the games we did together.
Next week, on Tuesday straight after school, we are holding a special Fun Maths Session. You should have received a letter from school, but if you haven’t returned a slip and would like to come, please just speak to your Miss Cuthbert or Mrs Fisher. At the end of the session there will be a short demonstration of Mathletics too.
All the staff in Year 2 would like to say ‘Well done’ to the children for a fabulous first week back. Below are pictures of the children who got Special Mention certificates this week.
Next week we start our work on bees, have visit from a bee keeper, start Guided Reading and Phonics and will be doing lots of other exciting things. We will also be choosing our School Councillors for Year 2, if you want to be a school councillor, you might like to think about what you would like to say to your class to convince them to vote for you.
Have a wonderful weekend. From all the Year 2 team. Mrs Fisher, Miss Cuthbert, Mrs Suddards, Miss Hainsworth, Miss Morgan and Mrs Kenny.
