### Strange planets, 3D shape and Martin Luther King!

Maths

We started this week looking at shape symmetry in 2D shapes. The children investigated this by folding shapes. We found out that squares, rectangles, circles and some triangles are symmetrical but that a parallelogram was not! We then looked at shapes and said if they were symmetrical or not symmetrical and drew vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines of symmetry.

We then moved onto to identifying 3D shapes and describing their properties. We looked at the 2D flat faces on a 3D shape e.g. a cube has 6 square faces and a cuboid has 2 square faces and 4 rectangular faces. We also talked about shapes with curved surfaces such as spheres, cylinders and cones.

We then looked at edges and vertices.

Can you find and describe any 3D shapes at home?

English

We have been even further into space this week, travelling to weird and wonderful imaginary planets! Here are some of our designs…

We then wrote a diary entry for our adventure. The children remembered time words, adjectives and conjunctions.

In topic this week, we found out about the life of Martin Luther King. We enjoyed writing our own ‘I have a dream’ speeches about our dreams for the world.

Thank you everybody for all your hard work this half term. After the holidays, we will be learning about Africa.

Have a great holiday,

From the Year 2 Team

Zahra has been telling me all about her ‘Fruit’ Planet with the funniest Alien being the Strawberry one with three blue eyes! Sounds like a fun place to go!
She also retold me the story of Martin Luther King. Its amazing how much they understand at such a young age.

2. Ellen (Erin’s Mum) says:

Erin’s favourite thing this week was drawing her planet too! Looks like they were all exciting planets, some look a bit scary too.

3. Zoe Webb says:

Jack has had a great week. Thanksnto all the staff covering whilst Mrs Loveridge is absent. I knownJack has really missed you so get well soon. Jack has been teaching me about planets and 2d shapes too even bringing some work home he didn’t have time to complete in school. He’s loving the Maths SATs book too (less so the English haha). Have a lovely break everyone

4. Natalie (Joshua's Mum) says:

Joshua really enjoyed learning about 3D and 2D shapes and found it fun. He said he enjoyed drawing his digital planet even though he ran out of time to colour it in.
