“My actions show others that I care about them,” is this weeks Ethos Statement and builds on to the ideas we have been exploring this half term about “Getting on and falling out.”
In our assembly we will share the story, “The Smartest Giant in Town,” by Julia Donaldson. Many of the children know the story and 1GJ have just been doing the story in Literacy, so it will really help us to think about the actions the giant took to help the characters he met in the story. Last week we sang the two part song, “Will you be a friend to me,” and we will sing this again, along with a new song called, “Build up.”
Here are the words to the song, “Build up.”
Every word you say, every game you play, every silly face, every single place, you can build up, 1,2,3,4,5….. or you can tear down.
Every joke you tell, every name you spell, every where you go, every one you know,you can build up, 1,2,3,4,5….. or you can tear down.

Our Ethos Statement this week was, ” I help to make our school a Bully Free Zone.” We talked about Bullying and I am pleased to say that no one felt they were bullied now, or had recently seen any bullying at school. However some children could talk about previous experiences of Bullying. In all these cases the children had talked either to their parents or to an adult at school. When the children had told their parents, their parents had then spoken to the teacher and then the teacher had spoken with the children involved and the problem had been resolved.
We decided that we would not only work on making the school a ‘Bully Free Zone,’ but also a ‘Friendship Zone.’ Being Happy is part of our new Learning Hive and we all know that it means not only us being happy, but also us helping to make others happy too.

This weeks Ethos Statement is
I have talked with the North School Councillors and we have done a Circle in class about bullying and it was good to hear that most children thought that there was no bullying in their class. A few children talked about bullying they had experienced or known of in the past, so we explored how this bullying had stopped and in every case it was clear that an adult had been told. Telling an adult will be a key message in our assembly.
What is bullying? It is important that children understand that we can hurt and upset each other in ways other than physically hurting each other. Ignoring, laughing at, pulling faces and using unkind words can all cause just as much upset to someone.
In our class circle we talked about saying sorry. We agreed that if someone hurts us accidentally and then says sorry in a meaningful way, it does make us feel better. But ‘sorry’ doesn’t always work, if it’s said sarcastically or without meaning, it doesn’t work. If we feel we were upset on purpose, then even when someone says ‘sorry,’ we still hurt inside.
In our assembly we will do an activity with a large clean sheet of paper. We will think of things that might be said or done by a bully and each time we will crumpled the paper up a bit more. Then we will apologise and each time we will straighten the paper out a bit more. We will see that the paper never can be returned to the clean crisp sheet it was.
