Farsley Farfield Year 2

Join us on our learning adventures.

Back to the 60s!

27/01/2017 at 8:35 AM

Following on from our 1960’s performance on Monday, we have been learning all about everyday life in the 60’s. The children loved listening to our visitors on Wednesday, and enjoyed looking at the fantastic range of objects and clothing that they brought in. A big thank you to Florrie’s mum, grandma and friend, Alice’s mum and grandma and Sophie’s grandma and great aunt for coming in and sharing your stories.

We have been investigating artefacts from the 1960’s and comparing them to objects we use today.  Can your child talk about what they were used for and how different they are to today’s household objects?

In maths, we have been using different methods for subtraction to help us solve money problems.

We used dienes (tens and ones) and blank number lines to record our subtractions.

Moving Words 1960s Day

23/01/2017 at 4:00 PM

What a fantastic day we had today with Colin and Adam from ‘Moving Words’. Through the use of performance poetry and drama, we learnt all about 1960s famous events, television programmes, popular music and famous people.
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, carers and friends who attended our performance this afternoon. I think you’ll agree that the children were brilliant!

This week in Year 2

19/01/2017 at 4:23 PM

This week in Year 2, we have been inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. We enjoyed looking at some of his most famous artwork from the 60’s and have started to create our own pop art portraits. Photos of our final work will be posted next week!

Can you be inspired to create your own pop art at home? Maybe you could choose somebody famous from today or a modern object as your starting point?

In English, we have continued our theme of moon adventures, improving our stories and developing new ideas for a diary entry. We have been writing in past tense so have been concentrating on spelling regular and irregular past tense verbs.

Click on the picture below to play a game to practise.

In maths this week, we have been solving money problems. Can you set up your own shop to practise finding totals and giving change?

We are really looking forward to the Moving Words workshop on Monday. Don’t forget there is a performance for parents at the end of the day (2.40pm). We hope to see you there.

Finally, thank you to all the parents who came to the Year 2 Assessment and Expectations meeting this week. If you missed it and would like a copy of the handouts, please see either class teacher.

Have a lovely weekend.

Y2’s Adventures to the Moon

12/01/2017 at 4:05 PM

This week, we have been on our own journeys to the moon!

We learned all about the moon landing in 1969 and researched Neil Armstrong’s life history. We loved watching the video footage of Neil and Buzz bouncing on the moon!

Through drama, we created our own 5 part story, around the theme of going to the moon. We are now writing our own versions of the story.

  1. Opening-We began by packing our suitcases and building our rockets.
  2. Build up- We launched into space, described what we saw and heard before landing on the moon.
  3. Problem – We met a space alien with a broken space ship.
  4. Resolution- We helped the alien by using the things we had brought to help fix his spaceship.
  5. Ending- We took a selfie to remember the alien and our adventure. Then we said goodbye and travelled home.

In maths this week, we have been learning about money.  We have been using coins to make different amounts and have investigated making the same amount in different ways.

eg How many ways can you make 50p?

How can you make 26p using the fewest coins?

Next week, we will be moving on to solving problems involving the addition and subtraction of money, including giving change.

Help wanted!

Some grandparents have volunteered to come in to talk to the children about the 1960’s, however, we would like some more! If you know someone who would be available to come in to school, please see your child’s class teacher.

Happy New Year from Year 2!

06/01/2017 at 1:46 PM

Welcome back!  It was lovely to see all the children come back to school on Tuesday morning and hear their holiday news.

We have had a great start to the new year.  The children have been showing a great attitude to learning and have been particularly excited about our new topic, the 1960s.  In our time machine so far, we have found old money and toys from the 1960s.  I wonder what will appear next week?

In English, we have been looking at the features of non- fiction texts to help us learn more about the 1960s.

In maths, we have been busy learning all about division and the relationship between multiplication and division facts.         For example, using these three numbers make two multiplication and two division number sentences:

2, 5, 10

We can show the relationship of the three numbers using a calculation triangle:

You should have now received the following letters from school:
