A fantastic start to the half term in Year 2!

By now, hopefully you have all read our newsletter and have seen what we will be learning about this half term. You should have also received a Mosque visit letter. Please can these be returned to school as soon as possible?

We began our new topic by looking at maps. Can you identify the continents and the oceans? We looked at places that are near to Farsley and those that are further away.


Over the past few weeks we have been learning about medicines. This week we finished the topic by thinking about keeping safe with medicines. Can you remember any of the safety rules?

English- Tinga Tinga Tales!

The children have enjoyed watching the Tinga Tinga Tales stories in class this week: How The Snake Lost His Legs, How Monkeys Came To Swing in the Trees and How Elephant got his Trunk. We have written reviews, descriptions of animals and have sequenced a story, ready for planning and writing our own next week. Have you got any ideas yet?


We have been solving fractions word problems, looking at the equivalence of 1/2 and 2/4 and writing fractions sentences to match pictures.

We have started our Tinga Tinga Art. We can’t wait to see the finished pieces!

Goodbye 1960s

This week, we say goodbye to the 1960s. Our lovely display of Andy Warhol inspired artwork has come down in preparation for our new topic for after half term, Africa.

Can you spot your portrait?

In topic this week, we enjoyed learning more about Martin Luther King, and wrote our own “I have a Dream” speech. We were so impressed with the children’s ideas. They showed their understanding of ‘Be Healthy’ and ‘Be a good citizen’ through many of their speeches. What a wonderful world it would be!


We read the story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ which was first published in 1968. We mapped out the story on a story mountain and retold it with our partner.

We then planned and wrote our own versions. Some of the ideas included: The Bunny Who Came to Breakfast, The Lion Who Came to Lunch and the Skunk Who Came to Supper. The children tried really hard to add detail and description to their stories and many of them managed to include speech sentences.


Thank you for all the brilliant learning logs on fractions. It is clear that children have been enjoying the challenge and it has been great to see many of them using the bar models we have used in class.

This week we have been finding fractions of amounts and lengths, using the bar model to work out our answers. can you show your grown up how we use the bar model to work out these tricky fractions questions:

1/? of 15 = 5

I cut 1/3 of a piece of string. It is 4cm long. How long was my piece of string?

Spring 2

After the holidays our main topic will be Africa. This will be a geography and art based topic. What can you find out about Africa ready for our learning next half term?

1960s Fashion and Music

This week we have learned about fashion and music from the 1960s. We loved looking at the different styles and enjoyed designing our own clothing inspired by these various styles. Which was your favourite: Flower power, hippy style, geometric, space age or maybe mods or rockers? We found out more about The Beatles and enjoyed singing and using instruments to accompany the song, ‘She Loves You’.


We have used all our 1960s knowledge to write a non-chronological report about the 1960s. We remembered to write in full sentences, used correct punctuation, used the correct tense (with a few reminders about was and were!) and tried to use a range of conjunctions to extend our sentences. We focused on the correct features of non- fiction such as writing an introduction, using subheadings and writing in paragraphs.


The children have really enjoyed learning about fractions this week. We have looked at fractions of shapes and have started to think about fractions of quantities and equivalence.
