Farsley Farfield Year 2

Join us on our learning adventures.

Busy busy in Year 2!

24/11/2017 at 12:43 PM

In English this week, we have been building on our Polar Adventure drama by using the book ‘Poles Apart’ by Jeanne Willis to inspire our writing.  The children wrote fabulous descriptive postcards using ‘right choice words’ for adjectives and verbs.

In Maths, we have continued our work on multiplication.  The children have made good progress in their understanding of how to tackle worded multiplication problems. Some children even managed to solve two step problems.

Try to solve this two step problem:

Joe bakes 4 trays of buns.

There are 5 buns in each tray.

Joe sells 5 of the buns.  How many are left?

Christmas Performance

The children have been working hard practising the Christmas performance.  Please can you continue to practise the words at home and make sure that your child knows when to speak in the play (cue).

Learning Log

This week’s learning log is:

We have been writing expanded noun phrases in English. Draw or stick in a picture related to our topic ‘Polar Regions’. Then label the picture with expanded noun phrases. E.g. huge, furry polar bear or gigantic iceberg

Extra Challenge: Can you write a description, using your expanded noun phrases?

2LA’s Arctic Adventure

21/11/2017 at 3:38 PM

Yesterday afternoon, 2LA went on an amazing journey to the Arctic!
We looked at clues to find out where we were going, then packed our bags. We packed all our warm clothes, food, maps and a compass. We decided to pick up some huskies in Alaska first and used the compass to travel north. When we got there, we explored our surroundings. We saw polar bears, icebergs and it was very cold and windy. Later on we found a little penguin who was lost. We discovered that he was a long way from his home in the South Pole so we took him back to Antarctica.

2LO’s Arctic Adventure

21/11/2017 at 3:01 PM

2LO went on really exciting adventure this morning to the Arctic.
We had to be bold, brave and intrepid explorers! First we packed our bags and then journeyed out across the Arctic Ocean until we reached the North Pole. When we arrived, we found a lost penguin who should have been at the South Pole. We had to think of a way to help it and return it back home to Antarctica.

What an amazing adventure we had!

This week in Year 2….

17/11/2017 at 1:04 PM

This week in Year 2 we have been learning all about how animals survive in winter.  The children learnt about hibernation, migration and adaptation.  The children read reports and made notes.  They then wrote their own non-fiction report.

This week in Maths, we have been focussing on multiplication. We looked at the relationship between multiplication and repeated addition and then moved onto learning about arrays.

You could play this game at home:

We also started our DT sewing project, designing a polar animal hanging decoration. Some children have already started to make theirs. Look out for these wonderful creations coming home in a few weeks!

Our Christmas Performance singing is already sounding fabulous and we aim to start practising the acting next week. We have enough speaking parts for everyone in Year 2, either as narrators or characters in the play. We would like your help in learning lines; practising speaking clearly, loudly and with expression. The scripts will go home on Monday. Thank you in advance.

Firework Poems in Year 2

10/11/2017 at 12:58 PM

This week we have had fun reading, writing and perorming different firework poems.  We looked at different poetic techniques as such alliteration and rhyme as well as how to choose the most effective verbs and adjectives.  When performing their poems, the children had to speak clearly with expression and use actions to make it more enjoyable for the audience.

Phil Earle visits Farsley Farfield!

07/11/2017 at 12:03 PM

What a brilliant morning we had this morning when Phil Earle came to visit us!  The children were enthralled as Phil entertained us with stories of his life and the inspirations behind his stories.  A little later, Phil treated us by reading some of his books to us.  Some children were lucky enough to meet Phil in person and get their books signed.

Phil didn’t start writing until he was 26 years old. As Phil said, we are all able to write amazing stories: just remember to write about something that you are passionate about!

Money, money, money!

03/11/2017 at 3:01 PM

Welcome back!

This week we have been working really hard to understand money. We have been recognising coins and their value, counting money, making totals and then finding different ways to pay.

Please try these activities as home:

  1. Count the money in your purse or piggy bank.
  2. Play shops! Make some price labels for your toys or other objects and use coins to make the correct amount.
  3. Find different ways to pay. e.g. When making 15p         10p + 5p = 5p + 5p +5p

In English this week we have been using adjectives in our sentences and descriptions. We have used the story Room on the Broom as our inspiration. Look at all the super expanded noun phrases to make this witch’s potion:

Remember, Remember the 5th of November?

The children now know why we celebrate bonfire night. We learned all about the gunpowder plot and retold the story. We have thought about Fireworks safety and written some rules to follow:

We hope you have a lovely weekend and stay safe if you are watching any fireworks.
