We have had another busy week in year 2.
In English we read the traditional tale ‘The Little Red Hen’ and have looked at the alternative version ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’. We found out that in both stories the main character wanted to make something but their unhelpful friends refused to help them. The children are now busy planning their own alternative version which they will write next week. Can they tell you about the ideas they have planned?
In maths we have continued our work on place value looking at comparing and ordering numbers. Can you explain how to use the symbols < > = to an adult?
Mathletics: We are all now up and running with our Mathletics passwords and have had a chance to learn how to use the website at school. Please log on at home and see if you can earn enough points for a bronze certificate. You never know, you may be our top point scorer and earn our Mathlete of the Week trophy!
We have been enjoying our PE lessons. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we are developing our gymnastics skills focussing on being able to hold a position and balancing. On Wednesday’s outdoor session, we have been working on SAQ skills (speed, agility and quickness).
On Friday afternoons, the children have been taking part in different activities:
- In RE children are finding out how Christians and Muslims welcome new life – thank you for sending in your baby pictures.
- In coding, children have been programming Beebots and learning about simple algorithms.
- In food and cooking, the children have been learning more about food groups and sorting food into categories.
- Mrs Kenny is working with groups of children every week to make the garden area outside Year 2 more attractive and to encourage wildlife. The photos below show the children making bird feeders.

Yesterday we had a lovely time at the medical museum, learning all about Florence Nightingale. The children took part in a workshop where they learned all about Florence’s life and work. They enjoyed a number of activities including sorting objects into those that would be found in the dirty hospital before Florence arrived, and those that would be found in a clean hospital. They also used a timeline to find out about things that Florence would have known about and things that she wouldn’t; this really helped them to understand chronology. They loved dressing up as porters and nurses and were very enthusiastic about cleaning Scutari hospital and looking after the wounded soldiers! We spend the rest of the day exploring the galleries, learning more about being healthy. A big thank you to our parent helpers.

What a brilliant day we have had today learning about Florence Nightingale’s life and about how she changed the face of nursing. The children were brilliant: well behaved, polite and very enthusiastic to learn!
First, we explored the gallery and learnt some interesting facts about the human body – most children liked learning about how their food was digested the most!
After lunch, we learnt how Florence Nightingale changed nursing by cleaning up the hospitals. We had to look closely at, and sort lots of different artefacts into whether we thought they belonged in hospitals before or after Florence Nightingale arrived in Scutari Hospital. There were lots of very stinky smells from the dirty hospitals!
Finally we pretended to visit Scutari Hospital in Turkey. The boys were porters and the girls were nurses. When we were at Scutari Hospital, we had to scrub the walls, clean the bandages and nurse the wounded soldiers.

This week in Year 2, we started our new topic “Be Healthy”. We talked about what we need to do to keep our bodies healthy. We thought about what we typically eat and drink in a day and if we choose ‘5 a day’. We are sending home a learning log today: How do you keep healthy?
In English this week we have been using our senses to help us generate vocabulary for poetry. We particularly enjoyed using our senses to write a poem about different fruits! Can you guess which fruit we thought was sour?!
We have also started reading the story ‘The Twits’ as a class. In today’s English lesson, we used adjectives in a list poem about what is in Mr Twit’s beard. We also introduced the term possessive apostrophe.
This week in maths we have been partitioning 2 digit numbers. We used part whole models to show how to partition a number into tens and ones.
We have thought about different ways to partition numbers. For example:
36 = 30 + 6
36 = 20 + 16
36 = 10 + 26
We used this activity in class today to practise partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and ones.
- Please ensure that you have a full PE kit every Monday and Wednesday (2LO) and Tuesday and Wednesday( 2LA).
- Reading books can be changed any day. Please aim to be changing books at least twice a week.
Don’t forget it’s our Thackray Medical Museum trip next week.

We will be starting some artwork next week and would like you to bring in any spare collage materials you may have at home. in particular, we would like tin foil, sponges, sponge cloths, wool and bubble wrap.

Welcome to Year 2!
What a fantastic start we have had in Year 2!
We have been so impressed with how well the children have settled into their new classes and how quickly they have got used to their new routines.
This week we have been thinking about class rules, the learning hives and how we learn. We have set ourselves some targets for the year linked to these. We created some wonderful personal art work.
In maths this week we have started to learn more about the place value of numbers.
In topic this week, we shared our holiday stories and used maps to find the places we have been to.
We enjoyed playing some games in PE.
In English we wrote letters to our class travelling bears telling them about where we have been in the world and where we would like to go. We did a great job!
We have done some amazing reading already too. We have used the reading dogs to help us answer different types of questions.
