A Polar Adventure in Year 2!

29/11/2019 at 1:41 PM

This week we have used drama, stories and information texts to find out more about Polar lands and the animals that live there.

We began our English lessons this week by going on a Polar adventure. Through drama, the children thought about what to pack, how to travel and what they would see on their journey to the Arctic. When we arrived we found a penguin who was clearly a long way home. The children thought of different solutions, eventually deciding that we would take the lost penguin home back to Antarctica!

2LA enjoyed catching fish, riding on a sledge pulled by huskies and phoning the South Pole!

2LO enjoyed steering the ship, exploring the Arctic, discovering the lost penguin and thinking of ways to get it home.

Next we used the story Poles Apart to inspire our writing. This story tells a similar tale to our drama of penguins lost in the North Pole. Luckily they meet a friendly polar bear called Mr White, who was willing to take them on a journey back to their home. The children wrote wonderful postcards from Mr White’s point of view which detailed their journey from the Arctic to Antarctica and the countries they visited on the way.

In our geography lesson, we found out about some of the animals that live in polar regions and how they have adapted to live there. The children researched the different animals to find out if they lived in the Arctic or Antarctica.

Money, Money, Money!

In maths this week we have been busy making different amounts of money using coins and notes. The children have explored making the same amount of money in different ways, have investigated if they can make amounts using 2, 3 or 4 coins and have chosen the fewest amount of coins needed to pay. Please spend some time this weekend playing shops and using real money to pay. Next week we will move onto giving change.

We are really enjoying our GymMagic sessions. Here are children from 2LO:

Christmas Performance

Please can children learn their lines and the songs ready for our rehearsals next week. The rehearsals will go much more smoothly if children can already say their lines clearly and loudly. Thank you in advance.

Preparing for Winter in Year 2

22/11/2019 at 1:13 PM

We have definitely started to see a change in the weather this week and have been thinking about how animals will be preparing for winter.

In our English lessons we have been watching video clips and reading information to find out more about different animals. The children enjoyed learning about squirrels and some of the clever things they do. Children wrote fact sentences to explain how they get ready for winter by fattening up, storing nuts and making comfy homes. We also found out about hedgehogs and how they hibernate.

By using our knowledge about migration from last week, the children were able to produce a short report about the different ways animals prepare for winter. We were really impressed with what they produced.

In maths this week we continued our work on addition and subtraction. Children are now really confident in how they can add and subtract two 2-digit numbers using tens and ones and most children managed to master exchanging too. Well done!

Today we started our new maths topic on money. This will continue for the next few weeks.

Some children are working with Mrs Kenny to develop their confidence in maths. Here they are using 100 squares, tens and ones and place value cards to make 2 digit numbers.

We have started to think about hot and cold areas of the world and have looked at why some places have hot and others have cold climates. Children learned about the equator and the poles. We recapped our knowledge about the different continents, labelling these on a world map.

KS1 Christmas Performance

Your child will be bringing home their lines that they need to learn for this year’s Christmas performance. Please spend some time learning these and practising speaking in a loud, clear voice.

Fun and Friendship in Year 2

15/11/2019 at 12:16 PM

Anti-bullying Week

This week we have been learning about how to be a good friend as part of our PSHE lessons. We used the story Elmer to look at friendship and the difference between laughing at someone and laughing with them. We also thought about ways we could make someone smile, just like Elmer did in the story.

The theme for this year’s Anti-Bullying Week is ‘ Change starts with us’. Every child then wrote a pledge explaining what they will do to prevent and tackle bullying.

We also talked about feeling left out. We thought about ways we can be a good friend and sorted some statements into two groups: things that help you to make friends and things that don’t.

Children in Need

We had a fantastic day in our ‘adjective outfits’ talking about words and thinking about their meaning. We started the day by studying each word; children wrote a sentence, a definition, synonyms and drew a picture. We definitely expanded our vocabulary with some of the more unusual outfits! We even had a visit from a ‘terrifying’ dinosaur!

We then met with our new Reading Buddies from Year 6. We had a great time getting to know them, finding out some things about each other and sharing a book. We look forward to working with them throughout the year.

We have continued our work on addition and subtraction this week so that we are more confident when asked to add or subtract two 2-digit numbers. We now understand how to partition each number into tens and ones and have some strategies for recording our methods. In Year 2 we don’t use any formal methods such as column addition or subtraction; instead we ensure that children have a secure understanding of place value and partitioning which prepares them well for the more formal methods in Year 3.

English and Geography

We have started to think about our new geography topic which started with some work on the weather and seasons. We read the story ‘Follow the Swallow’ by Julia Donaldson, which tells the tale of two friends, Chack the Blackbird and Apollo the Swallow. They learn about how each of the birds finds a different way to survive in the winter. The children wrote book reviews and then went on to describe the different characters in the story.

Next week, we will be learning more about how animals prepare for winter; your learning log homework will help you prepare for this!

Gym Magic

The children thoroughly enjoyed their visits to Gym Magic. Please remember to bring PE kits back into school for our second PE session on Wednesdays. Here are some photos from 2LA’s visit. Will will add some 2LO photos next week.

Year 2 News

08/11/2019 at 12:50 PM

Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing half term break; it was lovely to hear about the children’s adventures whilst at home. The children have come back to school ready to learn and have impressed us with their hard work and attitude to learning.

You should have received some letters and information this week about forthcoming topics and events. Please see class teachers if you have not seen the Year 2 Newsletter or letter about Gym Magic.

This week in Science we have been learning about evergreen and deciduous trees. We went on an Autumn walk to find leaves from deciduous trees. We also spotted some evergreen trees on our walk. When we got back to the classroom we used a leaf identifying sheet to work out which trees the leaves were from. Although the weather wasn’t kind to us, both classes enjoyed collecting and identifying the leaves.

In maths this week, we have been learning strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.

We have used base 10 (tens and ones) to partition each number into tens and ones then recombine to find the total.

We have learned that sometimes when adding ones, we need to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten:

Sometimes when we are subtracting ones, we need to exchange 1 ten for 10 ones.

Try with some similar examples at home to earn some extra dojos. You can draw tens and ones to support.

In English this week, we have been exploring right choice words in fireworks poems. We have looked at how we can use alliteration and rhyme. Children have read, performed and written their own poetry. We were so impressed with the children’s ideas and they worked hard to edit their poems before making their final drafts.

Reminders for next week:

On Monday 2LO need to come to school in their PE kit ready for their visit to Gymmagic. Children in 2LA will need to come in PE kits on Tuesday.

Next Friday 15th November is Children in Need. Please see letter sent home or ask class teachers for further details. We look forward to seeing your ‘adjective’ outfits!

Cold/ wet weather request:

Please make sure that children have appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoors in the changing weather. We still like to use the grassy areas so having a pair of wellies in school saves children getting wet/muddy shoes! Thank you.

New Learning Log this week:

Year 2 Learning Log Homework – 8th November 2019

We would like you to find out how animals get ready for winter. You can choose to focus on one animal or a few.

To be handed in on Wednesday 20th November

We look forward to seeing your work!
