Merry Christmas from Year 2!

20/12/2019 at 2:00 PM

What an exciting week we have had with fun activities, parties and performances! Thank you to all who came to our show; we hope you enjoyed it!

We have still managed to fit in some of our usual lessons! We have worked particularly hard in maths this week, getting to grips with multiplication. The children have been using maths ‘stories’ to understand this tricky new concept. Here are some of our own stories with the calculation to match:

We also made some Christmas tree pictures using our measuring skills. Children had to measure, cut and stick strips of paper in place to make their Christmas tree before decorating. We were very impressed with how well the children tackled this activity.

We had a fantastic party day. We made our own party food, played games and danced til we dropped! We had a very special visitor at the end!

We would like to say a huge thank you for all your support this half term. Have a lovely break and we will see you all again on the 6th January 2020!

A busy week in Year 2

13/12/2019 at 1:39 PM

We have been keeping very busy this week with various art and craft activities in preparation for Christmas. Next week the children will be bringing home calendars, cards and decorations that they have made.

In geography lessons, we have been finishing our posters about Churchill and finding out about how polar bear habitats are being affected by global warming.

In maths this week, we have started to explore the concept of multiplication. This started with the idea of  equal groups.

There are 2 equal groups with 3 in each group.

Children then went on to record this as repeated addition, 3 + 3 = 6 and then as a multiplication 2 x 3 = 6.

Children will continue to build on this and develop their understanding next week.

Here we are representing 4 equal groups with 3 in each group:

In English lessons this week, we read the story ‘Harvey Slumfenburger’s Christmas Present’. We enjoyed discussing the story and writing book reviews.

Reminders for next week:

  • A few children still do not have their Christmas play costumes in school. All year 2 children are wearing Christmas jumpers or festive colours with dark trousers or leggings. Please can you make sure they have the appropriate clothing on Monday morning at the latest! Thank you.

Performance times in the Junior Hall:

Tuesday 17th December 2pm

Wednesday 18th December 9:30am

  • We are having our Christmas Party on Thursday. Please make your 50p party snack contribution on ParentPay. Children can come to school in their party clothes.

Have a lovely weekend!

The Jolly Postman and Money Problems

06/12/2019 at 1:11 PM

This week we have been writing letters and diaries. We read The Jolly Postman and enjoyed retelling the story and sequencing the postman’s journey. We also wrote a diary entry for the postman’s busy day.

We then thought about who else he might deliver a letter to and we decided to write letters to the little pigs from a builder. Children used what they knew about the story of the three little pigs to write their letters.

In maths this week, we have solving money problems. The children have been finding totals and giving change. Please practise using the game below:

In our geography lesson, we found out about a place called Churchill in Canada. People visit Churchill to see polar bears in the wild. Here are 2LO creating posters about Churchill using pic collage. 2LA will be doing this next week.

We have also started some art and craft activities to create Christmas cards and calendars. Here are a few pictures of us being busy!!

We have been working hard practising for our Christmas Show. The children now all know their lines and the singing is sounding fantastic! Thank you for your support with this at home.

Please can children bring their costumes in ready for next week. Thank you.
