Monday 27th September
Hopefully the children have created their own story plan to work on this week.
We will be using this to write the beginning of the story today. Children have a sheet in their packs to start their stories on plus a writing frame to use if needed.
Today we are carrying on with our work on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
There is an extra activity to work on in your packs if children have finished the red revision sections in their White rose maths books.
Today we are going to find out more about Florence Nightingale. (Video below for information) I would then like the children to write some questions to Florence, using what they have found out.
Mrs Wilson will be teaching the class today!
Science – We will be building on what children have learned in school about a healthy, balanced diet. There is a copy of the eatwell plate in your packs and a lunchbox sheet for the independent activity.
There are more activities to try on the food a fact of life website:
RE – children will be learning about how to welcome a new baby.
Spellings – oy or oi?
There are two activities in your pack to complete.
Today we will write the next part of the story. Children will need to think carefully about the steps for whatever their character is making.
Can you count in 3s? This will be new learning for most children. We will do some activities together before watching the video and completing the pages in the workbook.
Spellings– ow or ou?

Earlier this week, a mysterious suitcase arrived in our class. The children had to look at the objects and artefacts contained within the suitcase and work out who the case belonged to. After we realised that it belonged to Florence Nightingale, we had to piece together the sources of evidence to try and tell her story. We thought about which of the sources were the most important and provided us with the most information. Over the next few lessons, we are going to answer the enquiry question: Who was Florence Nightingale and why is she a significant person?
In maths we have continued our work on place value looking at comparing and ordering numbers. Can you explain how to use the symbols < > = to an adult? We have also been putting numbers in order. You could play this game at home to practise:
We have also started to look at number sequences counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Please practise this at home over the weekend if you have time!
In English we read the traditional tale ‘The Little Red Hen’ and have looked at the alternative version ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’. We found out that in both stories the main character wanted to make something but their unhelpful friends refused to help them. The children have planned their own version of the story today and will write these next week. They came up with some amazing ideas!
The children really impressed us with their creativity this week, designing and making some realistic food plate art. The children made their foods using tin foil, cardboard and tissue paper.

Good afternoon all. We will start our online learning tomorrow and all lessons will be accessed via google meet. You should already be members of the Year 2 2021-22 meet space (It’s the Year 1 meet space renamed!). If you have any problems, please let us know. Packs are either being sent home with siblings or being delivered to you this afternoon/evening. The resources should all be in the correct order.
Wednesday 22nd September
English power point story. Please read this before the lesson if you haven’t already.
We are going to use the sheet in the pack to retell the story. Please use the success criteria below. In Year 2 we expect all the children to include everything on the going for green list and encourage them to go for gold (for a double tick!)
Maths video to watch after our lesson before completing p38 in booklets.
Art videos to watch before the Google meet session at 1pm.
Please note: Children in school on Monday have already watched these but may still like to watch them again.
Your task is to design your own food plate collage and then make it with the resources in your pack (and some other bits you have at home!) Here are some from last year!
Thursday 23rd September
English- Mr Wolf’s Pancakes
I will be sharing this story as part of the lesson. Here it is again to enjoy or to watch if you are unable to join.
We will then write sentences to compare the two stories.
Maths video to watch after our lesson. Please then complete p 42 in your workbook.
History- Suitcase lesson
Please join me at 1pm to have a look at the objects and artefacts in the suitcase. We will use our detective skills to work out what they are and who they might belong to.
Friday 24th September
English- To plan our own alternative version of The Little Red Hen.
Please join me at 9:30 for this lesson. We will think of lots of ideas for our own stories. There is a plan in your pack and some ideas for what your character might want to make. Next week we will start our stories!
Maths- This is a revision lesson on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s from Year 1. Please join me at 11am for some activities.
Here are some videos to support the activities in the booklet. We will continue with this objective next Monday so don’t worry if you don’t complete all of the activities.
Spellings- air. There are some activities in your pack to support learning of the alternative ways to spell words with an air sound.

This week in Year 2, we started our new topic “Be Healthy”. We talked about what we need to do to keep our bodies healthy. We thought about what we typically eat and drink in a day and if we choose ‘5 a day’. We have sent home a 5 a day chart; please can children complete these and bring them back to school for a ‘Be Healthy’ dojo! Children also have their homework books with an activity to complete.
In English this week we have been using our senses to help us generate vocabulary for poetry. We particularly enjoyed using our senses to write a poem about different fruits! Here we are tasting fruits; can you guess who was tasting something sour?!
This week in science we were sorting pictures of food into groups. The children came up with their own ideas about how to sort them. The ideas included healthy/ not healthy, sweet/not sweet, like/dislike and junk food/ not junk food. This links into the work we are doing on the eat well guide.
This week in maths we have been partitioning 2 digit numbers. We used part whole models to show how to partition a number into tens and ones.
We have thought about different ways to partition numbers. For example:
36 = 30 + 6
36 = 20 + 16
36 = 10 + 26
We used this activity in class to practise partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and ones. Choose the TU numbers option.
On Friday afternoons, the children have started taking part in different activities. This half term the children will take part in:
- a cooking session
- a farm session
- 2 computing sessions
- 2 extra PE sessions

What a fantastic start we have had in Year 2!
We have been so impressed with how well the children have settled into their new classes and how quickly they have got used to their new routines.
We have enjoyed finding out about our class animals. We are all excited about being Year 2 foxes and squirrels!
This week we have been thinking about class rules, the learning hives and how we learn.
We have set ourselves some targets for the year linked to our learning hive. We created some wonderful personal art work.
In topic this week, we shared our holiday stories and used maps to find the places we have been to.
In maths this week we have started to learn more about the place value of numbers. We have shown what we know about numbers by drawing them in tens and ones, using a part whole model, writing the number one more and one less and also writing any interesting facts. We have practised writing numbers using both numerals and words. Today we looked at some different ways of representing 2-digit numbers using tens frames, base 10, straws and place value counters. Can your child show you how to represent a 2-digit number using these?
In English we wrote letters to Farsley Fox and Farsley Squirrel telling them about where we have been in the world and where we would like to go. We did a great job! We learned about using capital letters for proper nouns and using question words and question marks. The children used the question words on the wall.
We have done some amazing reading already too. We have used the reading dogs to help us answer different types of questions.
Can your child remember any of the characters?
You should also have received a paper copy of our September Newsletter with lots of other information about Year 2 and what is happening this half term. Here is a PDF copy too!
Thank you for your support so far. We are looking forward to a really great year!
The Year 2 Team.
