What an exciting week we have had with fun activities and parties!
We have still managed to fit in some of our usual lessons! We have worked particularly hard in maths this week, getting to grips with multiplication. The children have been using maths ‘stories’ to understand this tricky new concept. We have learned that multiplication can be represented in different ways: as repeated addition, lots of, groups of and as arrays.
After the holidays we will be continuing our work on multiplication before moving on to division. It would be great if children could start to regularly practise their times tables at home; In year 2 we learn 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x tables. Thank you.
We have started to look at arrays; Can you spot any arrays at home?
We also made some Christmas tree pictures using our measuring skills. Children had to measure, cut and stick strips of paper in place to make their Christmas tree before decorating. We were very impressed with how well the children tackled this activity.
We had a fantastic party day. We played games and danced til we dropped! Well done to our pass the parcel winners!
We hope you like your cards, calendars and decorations; we certainly enjoyed making them!
We would like to say a huge thank you for all your support this term and for your kind and thoughtful gifts and cards. Have a lovely break and we hope to see you all again on the 4th January 2022!
The Year 2 Team.

We have been keeping very busy this week with various art and craft activities in preparation for Christmas. Next week the children will be bringing home calendars, cards and decorations that they have made.
In geography lessons, we have been finding out about how polar bear habitats are being affected by global warming and about what we can do to help. The children made posters about the impact global warming is having on the Arctic regions and about the changes we can make in our everyday lives to try and reduce global warming.
In history, we have been learning about early expeditions to Antarctica and the race to be the first to reach the South Pole. The children have been fascinated by this story and have impressed us with the questions they asked and their understanding of historical evidence.
We enjoyed reading this story and completing a range of writing activities based on the book. The children wrote excellent book reviews. We have been so impressed with how well the children are now doing with their independent writing.
We have started a new topic on multiplication this week. The children have learned about equal groups. We have looked at multiplication as repeated addition. Next we we will be exploring this concept further.
Reminders for next week:
Thursday 16th December
We are having our party day next Thursday. Children can come in party clothes and bring a small amount of party food in a named box or bag, but please remember no nuts or food containing nuts. The children will have already eaten their lunch and so will not need to bring too much!

This week we have been writing letters and diaries. We read The Jolly Postman and enjoyed retelling the story and sequencing the postman’s journey. We also wrote a diary entry for the postman’s busy day.
We talked to the children about past tense verbs and the spelling rules for these.
We then thought about who else he might deliver a letter to and we decided to write letters to the little pigs from a builder. Children used what they knew about the story of the three little pigs to write their letters.
This week we have continued with our money work. Children have been solving lots of money problems and working out how to make the same amount using different coins. Next week, we will be finishing this topic and starting our new topic on Multiplication.
Please see homework books for some tasks to consolidate learning. You may want to use this website to practise:
In our geography lesson, we found out about a place called Churchill in Canada. People visit Churchill to see polar bears in the wild. We created posters in groups to show what we had learned.
The children are really enjoying their gym magic sessions!
